So You Have Decided to Buy A Puppy…Contact a Breeder-Right? Whoa..slow down. Yes you have done your research and yes you feel you are sufficiently committed to adding a dog as another member of your family. However, now the very important work begins.

Now you are ready to begin the really important step of adding a dog to your family. So please take the time to read through the information and fill out the check list & questionnaire, for your sake and the sake of the rest of the dogs quality of life. “We will give him/her everything” you tell us, but wait…what is everything…and where are those things positioned on a needs list?

Arguably this is one of the most important topics requiring discussion, simply because an ounce of prevention, is worth a pound of cure!

Breeders send us so many email requests asking how to respond to their prospective clients in away that will ensure that the client does indeed provide what the “new puppy” needs. We will examine some “typical” puppy requests and further discuss this issue in order that breeders have a location on the web that they can choose to send their prospective clients to for a clearer understanding of “Getting a Good Puppy Success List”.

Here are some typical examples provided to us for this topic. They give our readers some insight into what each person feels are important issues in regards to adding a puppy to their home:

I’m writing to enquire about puppy availability over the coming months. My family and I (we have two children, 7 and 4) would very much like to get a (Breed), as we feel they are a very compatible breed for us right now.

We recently lost our 13 year old dodg, and a few years ago also lost our 12 year old dog so are a dogless house right now. While we loved our dogs dearly, we now prefer a smaller, non-shedding breed to keep maintenance a bit easier. We’ve researched several breeds, and consistently come back to the (Breed) as a good match. We prefer intelligent, calm dogs (we had C.D.s on our previous dogs) and my 8 year old son would love to learn to do agility. Because we work during the week, it’s my understanding that (Breed) are a breed that would be ok on their own for a few hours at a time? We come home at lunch. He or she would be an indoor dog; I imagine that it gets far too hot and cold for (Breed) in (city).

We are seeking a pet on a non-breeding contract, and don’t really have a gender preference.

Ideally I’d love to get two Bostons but would get your advice on the timing of this and whether

simultaneous or staged is preferable.

And then this one:
